Webinar series Human Factors
Module 2: Communication – When “Well-Meant” Goes Wrong
Why communication fails precisely when it matters most.
“That’s not at all how I understood it.”
Misunderstandings are among the most common causes of errors, conflicts and friction in everyday work. Yet those involved usually lack neither expertise nor commitment.
In complex organisations in particular, people with different experiences, perspectives and expectations come together. Under time pressure or uncertainty, a different interpretation of the same information is often enough for something important to go unnoticed, for decisions to be delayed or for errors to be triggered.
Communication therefore means far more than exchanging information. What matters is whether everyone involved perceives the same situation and draws the right conclusions from it.
Human factors research examines how perception, communication and collaboration influence human action – and how organisations can create the conditions for clear communication and safe decisions.
The focus is therefore on questions such as:
- Why do misunderstandings arise even though everyone is pursuing the same goal?
- Why do people understand the same information differently?
- What role does communication play in safe decision-making?
- Which communication principles do high-reliability organisations use?
