Module 1: The Autopilot in Our Heads

Why we make mistakes even though we know better

People make mistakes. Even experienced, motivated and highly qualified people.

In everyday work, we rely on routines, experience and quick decisions. This saves time and energy. At the same time, our brain uses mental shortcuts, fills in missing information and falls back on familiar patterns. This is precisely what makes us efficient – but it can also lead us to overlook warning signs, misjudge situations or jump to conclusions.

Human error is therefore rarely a question of a lack of competence. It arises from the way our brain perceives and processes information and makes decisions under time pressure.

Organisations invest heavily in technology, processes and standards. Nevertheless, errors keep occurring – not because of a lack of knowledge, but because of the human factors that influence our actions.

Human factors influence how people perceive, decide and act in complex working environments – and how the interplay of people, technology, organisation and working environment affects safety, performance and collaboration.

The focus is therefore on questions such as:

  • Why do we overlook the obvious?
  • Why do even experienced people make mistakes?
  • Why can human error never be completely prevented?
  • How can organisations create conditions that support safe and effective action?

Aim of the webinar

This webinar teaches the fundamentals of human perception from a human factors perspective.

You will learn how our brain processes information, why errors are part of human action and what impact this has on safety, collaboration and the quality of decisions.

Practical examples from aviation and other high-reliability organisations show how these insights can be successfully transferred to companies, public administrations, local authorities, government agencies and other organisations.

What to expect

  • How our brain perceives and processes information
  • Typical errors of perception and thinking in everyday work
  • Why warning signs and risks are overlooked
  • How routines influence our attention
  • What consequences this has for collaboration, leadership and decision-making processes

What you will take away

  • A better understanding of human perception and decision-making processes
  • Greater awareness of typical errors of thinking and perception
  • Practical approaches to improving attention and the quality of decisions
  • Concrete ideas for dealing with risks and errors in everyday work
  • Greater confidence in assessing complex situations

Who the webinar is for

This webinar is aimed at anyone who wants to better understand the human factor and further develop their collaboration and decision-making skills.

You benefit personally from practical input and tools you can apply immediately in your everyday work – and your organisation benefits from better collaboration, better-founded decisions and a stronger organisational capacity to act.
