Empowering people to navigate complexity
Rooted in risk management
The term “Black Elephant” describes obvious, well-known issues or risks that are nevertheless not consistently addressed or dealt with.
It combines the idea of the “elephant in the room” with the logic of the “black swan”: the central problem is not the unexpected, but the known whose significance is underestimated.
In later developments of the term – among others by Vinay Gupta – Black Elephants stand for systemic tensions in complex environments that have no simple solutions, but call for the ability to keep learning and acting in the face of uncertainty. This understanding is an important foundation of our work.
Delivering working solutions for complex scenarios
Black Elephant is the first consultancy specialising in organisational resilience for critical infrastructure that unites “both sides” of resilience: the formal, legal side as well as the human and organisational side.
Combined expertise for your success
Our interdisciplinary team combines expertise from fields including Human Factors, disaster management, leadership, medicine and aviation, and stands for a new perspective on resilience: not as a reaction, but as a mindset.

Why Black Elephant?
A “Black Elephant” is a cross between a “black swan” (an improbable, unexpected event with enormous impact) and the “elephant in the room” (a problem that is visible to everyone but that nobody wants to address).
